London time

by trolly @ 12 Apr. 2007 - 16:43:58

mr trolly, tiny troll and me all headed into London yesterday to the Science Museum. the museum is free, and full of unexpected treasure, including Stevenson's Rocket and a collection of exquisite pocket sundials.

Stevenson's Rocket

pocket sundial

i have not worn a watch for six years (since the birth of my daughter), but a pocket sundial could be fun.

I love the Science Museum, there's always so many interesting things to get involved with. :)

i agree; it's interesting how museums work these days. lots of stuff behind glass, as ever, but lots of interactive, hands-on science for very young kids too...i loved it :-)

What kids? KIds? Nah, that play stuff is for the idiot grown-ups like me. ;D

I always told the children I was taking to the Science Museum it was for their benefit... but it really was for mine!!

Think they knew, really.

I won't have time this impending visit to get to the SM. Last time when there was a window of opportunity, hubby who went some years ago with kiddo, dissuaded me from the trip and we ended up doing something else. The alternative was good I have to say, but it was only good because it didn't involve science. Hubby is a fine scientist in his own right and on visit with kiddo all those years ago, found it a bit tele-tubbyish but fine for junior. Grr - I don't believe it was a sense of superiority, he just hasn't got the patience to wander around presentational simplifications that reach people like me. He finds it frustrating. When the next window crops up, I shall wander in on my own.

We've had some great visits to Scottish museums in Glasgow, including a transport museum which I thought was a lot better than the one in Covent Garden. If you ever get the chance, do visit the People's Palace in Glasgow. It's a great place.

The sundial, Trolly, you could thread a ribbon through and wear it like a pendant; much easier to assess the shadows of the day that way, but make sure in hangs low enough so that there is no 4 0'clock shadow. :D

Love the idea of pocket sundial - I want one too!
In Cardiff we have Techniquest which is hands on science museum and I've been several times without childfen. My ex had inspired idea of taking my parents there - They loved it.
