on the trail of brown shrimps

i used to write freelance for Fishing News in the 1990s, i was sorting through papers yesterday, and came across these images, which i'd like to share. the photos show Flookburgh fisherman, Ian McClure, a very experienced fisherman who works in Morecambe Bay.

i was lucky enough to accompany him, one beautiful morning at the crack of dawn. he showed me how to catch shrimps, and not fall off the back of the tractor. it was quite simply fantastic. real food, locally produced, carefully managed, sustainable.

Hubby says that the shrimp trawls were hauled by horses before the tractor came into use.

Interesting pictures Trolly. Morecambe Bay evocative.

yes, that's right; it was still really hard, manual work even with a tractor. i had a go at driving the tractor too, pulling the trawl, it was really tricky.

Morecambe Bay is a beautiful place.

Lovely pics Troll. Its sad that our thoughts of Morecambe Bay are now blighted by the thought of the Chinese cockle pickers.

The guys in the pics above look like the real deal and probably know the bay intimately. Which is a safety advantage i'm sure.

Nice to see you Trolly x

I used to work with "Clure" when a skinny student in the 80s, on a fish market in Kendal... yes he's certainly the real deal, and a great laugh too. Saw him on the Marco Pierre White programme last night, he hasn't changed much since I last saw him. I still have lots of memories of the days on the market, but probably none he would want me to share!
Shame that people associate Morecambe Bay with the Chinese cockle pickers, unavoidable I suppose. My advice is go there, buy some shrimps and cockles from Flookburgh and see how bonny it is for yourself. But leave the fishing to the professionals, i.e. families like Ian's.
